About This Book
Carmen Maria Machado's memoir about an abusive same-sex relationship is structured through forty-odd literary and folkloric genres — the haunted house, the choose-your-own-adventure, the fairy tale. Each chapter offers a different lens on the same domestic horror, asking how we tell stories about abuse when our cultural frameworks have never named or validated it. It won the Rathbones Folio Prize in 2021.
