About This Book
More than one million African Americans served in the US military during World War II, fighting for a country that denied them equal citizenship. Matthew Delmont tells their story—the double victory campaign against fascism abroad and racism at home—through soldiers' letters, newspapers, and personal testimonies, recovering a history of sacrifice and resistance largely absent from mainstream accounts of the war. Winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Nonfiction.
