About Travis Alabanza
Travis Alabanza is a British writer, performer, and theatre-maker born in 1994 in Bristol. They studied drama at Goldsmiths and have performed and made theatre across the UK and internationally. They are known for their live show Burgerz (2018), about the 2018 incident on Waterloo Bridge in which a burger was thrown at them, which toured internationally. None of the Above: Reflections on Life Beyond the Binary (2022, Canongate) is their first book, a memoir and cultural essay interrogating the gender binary and the violence it enforces, drawing on Alabanza's experience as a non-binary person navigating a world built on two-gender assumptions. Written in a conversational, searching voice, it won the Jhalak Prize in 2023. Alabazan uses they/them pronouns. Their theatre work includes Sound of the Underground (2022), winner of the Special Award at the Olivier Awards. They are one of the most prominent non-binary public figures in British arts.
