About Sofie Laguna

Sofie Laguna is an Australian author who won the Miles Franklin Award in 2015 for The Eye of the Sheep, a novel narrated by Jimmy Flick, an intensely sensitive boy growing up in a chaotic family marked by an alcoholic father and a mother who eventually disappears. The novel was praised for its extraordinary voice and its depiction of a child's attempt to make meaning in a threatening world. Laguna is the author of numerous children's books as well as adult literary fiction. Her debut adult novel One Foot Wrong (2008) was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin. The Choke (2017) was also longlisted for the Miles Franklin and deals with a traumatised child narrator in rural Victoria. She studied drama and later writing at various institutions and has been a significant presence in Australian fiction for two decades. Her work consistently displays a gift for inhabiting child consciousnesses and for rendering the particularities of working-class Australian life.
