Lionel Shriver is an American novelist born in Gastonia, North Carolina, in 1957. She studied at Columbia University. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2003) won the Orange Prize for Fiction 2005 and was adapted into a film. The Post-Birthday World (2007) and So Much for That (2010) received wide acclaim. Shriver's fiction frequently explores dark domestic and political territory. She is also a journalist who writes for The Guardian and The Spectator.
