Carole Boston Weatherford is a prolific American author of nonfiction picture books and biography for children who has won the Coretta Scott King Award multiple times, including for Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre (2021, written and illustrated with Floyd Cooper). She is known for her accessible verse narratives about African American history. Weatherford's books cover a remarkable range of historical subjects, from the Tulsa Race Massacre to the birth of jazz to Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Her books are widely used in schools across the United States as an entry point into African American history. She holds a doctorate in American Studies and teaches at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. She has published over fifty books and received the NAACP Image Award and the Sibert Medal, among other honours.
