About Attica Locke

Attica Locke is an American crime fiction author and television writer known for her Texas-set novels and her work on the television series Empire and Little Fires Everywhere. She won the Anthony Award for Best Novel for Bluebird, Bluebird (2018) and the CWA Gold Dagger shortlist for the same novel. Her fiction is known for its searing examination of race, justice, and the American South. Born in Houston, Texas in 1974, Locke studied creative writing at Northwestern University and was a Sundance Fellow. Her debut novel Black Water Rising was a finalist for the Edgar Award and Orange Prize. Bluebird, Bluebird introduces Texas Ranger Darren Mathews, a Black lawman investigating murders in deep East Texas, navigating both the formal justice system and the racial politics of his home state. She lives in Los Angeles and continues to work in both fiction and television.
