About Anjali Joseph

Anjali Joseph is a British-Indian novelist born in 1978 in Mumbai, India. She studied English at Cambridge University and has lived in London, Paris, and Norwich, where she teaches creative writing at the University of East Anglia. Her debut novel Saraswati Park (2010, Fourth Estate) is set in Mumbai and follows Mohan, a letter-writer at the post office, and his nephew Ashish, who has come to stay with him. Written in quietly luminous prose, the novel explores the slow passage of days, creative ambition, family expectation, and homosexual desire in contemporary Mumbai. It won the Desmond Elliott Prize in 2011, the Vodafone Crossword Award, and the Betty Trask Award. Her subsequent novels include Another Country (2012), The Living (2016), and Keeping in Touch (2021). Joseph's work is noted for its formal restraint, its observational delicacy, and its ability to hold the quotidian with full attention.
